Starting form 19th April, 2021 Nigerians can buy and register new SIM cards from all telecom companies and people that wants to activate their SIM cards can still do it.
This announcement came from a statement from the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, in the statement, the federal ministry said:
On 9th December, 2020 the federal government ordered telecom companies not to sell new SIM cards to consumers so as to allow the government to do another audit of the Subscriber Registration Database.
The suspension on new SIM registration affected Nigerians, especially those that were just returning from abroad and even foreigners, as it was difficult for them to make phone calls or use internet.
The statement also use the opportunity to give a warning to consumers that NIN (National Identity Number) is still compulsory as part of SIM registration and activation.
